Whether you’re on public Wi-Fi or just want to add an extra layer of security, setting up a VPN is a smart move. But how do you go about doing it?
It all depends on your device and operating system. Luckily, there are plenty of apps out there to help make the process simple.
1. Sign up for a VPN service
Once you decide on a VPN service provider, visit its website and navigate to the account setup or registration page. You may be asked to provide an email address and a password to create your account. Depending on the provider, you may also need to select a subscription plan. Most providers offer monthly, yearly, and custom plans to meet various budgets.
Once your account is created, you will receive an email containing instructions on how to download and install the VPN app compatible with your device’s operating system. You can also customize your VPN settings, if needed. For example, you can set the app to automatically connect on demand, or you can choose preferred server locations.
Setting up a VPN on your home Wi-Fi can enhance your online privacy and security by routing all traffic through a secure server, making it more difficult for hackers to intercept data. However, a VPN can also slow down your internet speed.
2. Download the app
A VPN isn’t just for computers; you can also set one up on your smartphone, smart TV or Chromecast. VPNs are useful for both businesses and individuals, offering protection from cybercrime and keeping data private on public Wi-Fi connections.
Tech-savvy users can also use the software that comes with their router to manually configure a VPN connection. This option requires technical knowledge and a bit more work, but can provide even more privacy protection.
Once you’ve signed up with a VPN provider, download the app for your devices and follow the instructions to install it. Then, login using your username and password or other sign in information. If prompted, select Connect and choose a server location. Once connected, a blue shield will appear on your taskbar indicating that you are protected by a recognized VPN. The number of servers available may vary by provider. Also, some VPNs offer custom configuration files for specific needs, like routing your traffic through an extra server to double-encrypt data or avoid CAPTCHA detection on websites.
3. Set up the app
If you’re looking to add more security to your internet connection, a VPN is an option worth considering. It can help you bypass censorship, access content that is otherwise unavailable in your location and stay anonymous online.
VPN apps are typically designed to make setup as easy and straightforward as possible. You can install the app on multiple devices and connect with one tap. Once you’ve set up the app, you can choose the server closest to your location and enter login information.
Many best vpn offer versions of their software for Chromebook. Those that don’t typically provide an app in the Google Play store, but do have configuration guides that walk you through the process of setting up a manual VPN.
Open the Settings app and select Wireless and Networks. Tap VPN and then the plus sign (+). Enter the information provided by your network administrator or VPN provider, such as server name or address, VPN type and type of sign-in info (or credentials). Click Save to complete the process.
4. Connect
Most VPN services have made it very simple to set up and connect via an app. You simply install it, sign in, and connect. If you want to go the extra mile for privacy and security, you can even install a VPN on your router (though that’s more technical and requires a little more skill).
Some VPN services also offer features like malware blocking, which is great for mobile devices or computers connecting over public Wi-Fi. They can also help you beat ISP throttling, which can make it slow to browse and stream videos.
For Android, open Settings and navigate to Network & Internet > VPN. Select Add a VPN connection, and fill in the required information, including the server name or address and VPN type. You can also choose to include a password and username for additional security. When you’re done, click Save. Your new connection will display in your list of VPN profiles.
